It may seem a silly question but in a year unlike few others in modern history, it actually is a serious one. Not only what is retail, but how will it survive and where is it headed in 2021 and beyond?
Even the casual observer of the fashion and retail worlds recognizes that the industry has changed faster in the last eight months than it had in the previous five years – and those changes are only like to reverberate into next year and beyond. E-commerce now represents a percentage of retailer’s sales that they expected to achieve only in a decade’s time, if ever. The concept of in-store service has had to be completely reinvented, and store cleaning, logistics and the health of not only one’s staff but also one’s customers have become primary concerns for all ceos. Fashion seasons and trade shows have been upended, turning into virtual or ‘phygital’ events.
In the first-ever virtual WWD Virtual Apparel & Retail Summit on December 2-3, we will bring together key industry thought leaders to discuss the outlook for the next 12 months and how brands and retailers are being forced to recalibrate. Will consumers ever return to stores en masse? Will they trade in their casual gear for ‘dressed up’ apparel? Will e-commerce continue to gain? How must the fashion system continue to adapt to the new consumer mindset and the push for sustainability and diversity? These are only a few questions likely to be addressed.
Our new digital format will enable us to provide the indepth information that has made the WWD Apparel & Retail Summit a ‘must’ event for the industry for decades. It also will enable the ability to interact with speakers throughout both days, plus the real-time networking opportunities that are so valuable to presenters and attendees alike.
We will continue to update you with speakers and sessions in coming weeks. Meanwhile, I hope you will join us for what promises to be a compelling day and look forward to seeing you on December 2-3. Stay safe.
