NASA Vascular Tissue Challenge Bioengineering Road-mapping Workshop.
August 9-13, 2021:12 PM – 3 PM Eastern, (9 AM – Noon PDT)

The output of this activity will be documentation of the Vascular Tissue Centennial Challenge results and implications, details and opportunities from the winning strategies, lessons learned, new targets and priorities, promising new approaches, enablers and impediments, and recommendations for next steps, including possible follow-on challenges. This will be captured in a NASA Technical Memorandum in the public domain as a formal close-out report from the VTC.

Day 1: Where are we now?

August 9th, 12 PM – 3 PM Eastern, (9 AM – Noon PDT)

During the first day of the Vascular Tissue Challenge Forum, we will explore the current state of the art technologies related to the bioengineering roadmap to ending the organ shortage that was developed through our previous VTC workshops. We will hear from NASA and NIH presenters about the latest activities in advancing thick-tissue bioengineering. We will also hear from the two award winning teams from the Vascular Tissue Challenge about their advancements. Concluding the day’s activities we will discuss in breakout groups about current state of the art technologies in bioengineering tissues related to each of the major thick-tissue organs.

Day 2: Where do we need to be?

August 10th, 12 PM – 3 PM Eastern, (9 AM – Noon PDT)

The second day of the VTC Forum explore the future of bioengineering thick-tissues for drug testing assays, research, and organ repair and replacement therapies. We will examine lessons learned from the Vascular Tissue Challenge process to help explore future challenge topics. We will hear from leaders at the NIH, NASA, and other agencies on key priorities for future research and development in advancing the bioengineering of thick-tissues. Concluding the day we will meet in breakout groups around future goals and needs in thick-tissue bioengineering for each of the major organs and tissue types.

Day 3: What Challenges are Ahead?

August 11th, 12 PM – 3 PM Eastern, (9 AM – Noon PDT)

We will hear from a panel of experts at NASA and NIH about the critical challenges that are ahead of the bioengineering community in creating engineered, thick tissues. We will discuss with participants of the Vascular Tissue Challenge some of the hurdles they faced and learn from the ways they worked to overcome them. We will also explore the “Live Science” aspect of the Vascular Tissue Challenge and discuss it’s benefits and detriments in helping to evaluate and incentivize new scientific discoveries. Concluding the day we will examine the challenges ahead in each of the key thick-tissue organs through breakout group discussions.

Day 4: What Resources are Available and Needed?

August 12th, 12 PM – 3 PM Eastern, (9 AM – Noon PDT)

We will learn from members of the investment community about how to navigate the line between core science, and investable technologies. We will explore the opportunities for new funding and advancements to help more researchers transition their work into investable technologies. We will also hear from NASA and the ISS National Lab on the exciting advancements in bioengineering in microgravity, and will explore future opportunities for new research. We will conclude the day with breakout discussions helping to define future opportunities for new prize programs to accelerate innovative bioengineering technologies.

Day 5: Recommendations Going Forward

August 13th, 12 PM – 3 PM Eastern, (9 AM – Noon PDT)

We will conclude the forum with a focus on exploring new recommendations for prizes, challenges, and other activities to build upon the success of the Vascular Tissue Challenge and other related advancements. We will hear from a panel about new opportunities in Tissue-on-Chip technologies and explore the potential of new prize challenges combining advancements from the VTC and Tissue-on-Chip technology. We will build upon discussions from the previous days to wrap up recommendations for future developments and potential prize programs to accelerate new bioengineered tissue technologies.
