Image Recognition Through Deep Learning & Neural Networks
I was born in 1986 in a small town called Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada. I went through elementary, middle, and high school while living in Beausejour and spent my time playing basketball throughout my school years. I was on the Manitoba Provincial Team for a year, was Captain of the Edward Shcreyer School Varsity Boys Basketball team for 2 years, and I also obtained the record for Most Points Scored in a Single Manitoba High School Basketball Game when I scored 77 pts.
After graduating high school, I went on to University of Manitoba where I studied Pre-Med for 1 year. I decided that medicine wasn’t for me and heard about the Engineering Science Program at University of Toronto. In the second year of this program, as a side project on my own, I started a business called Review-Mate. I continue to operate the company which has now expanded a great deal and sells course specific review booklets to university students. I got the idea as I was reviewing using my own notes for courses in the first two years at U of T, and I decided I could pass on this study technique through a business. I managed to start the business while maintaining a rank of 4th in the Engineering Science Program.
While obtaining my Engineering Science degree, I completed my undergraduate thesis under Geoffrey Hinton in the Machine Learning Group at University of Toronto. I now am attending New York University for a Computer Science PhD as of Fall 2009. The past two summers I have been an intern at the Google Brain group where I learned an amazing amount about scaling up machine learning to tackle real world problems.
