Krisztina Holly (@krisztinaholly), known by colleagues as ‘Z’, is an MIT-trained engineer, tech entrepreneur, and pioneer. She was curator and host of the first ever TEDx and founder of two university innovation centers at MIT and USC. Z is launching MAKE IT IN LA, a new non-profit to build community and content for the entrepreneurial ecosystem in manufacturing, inspired by her work as EIR for LA Mayor Garcetti.
Z served as vice provost for innovation at USC and founding executive director of two university innovation centers–MIT Deshpande Center and USC Stevens Center–which helped launch 39 funded startups, expanded innovation ecosystems in Boston and LA, and created TEDxUSC, so far inspiring 13,000+ events globally. She has been adjunct Professor of Innovation Practice at USC and consultant, advisor, and board member to many non-profit and private sector organizations globally, including the Obama administration and World Economic Forum.
Early on Z was co-founder of computer telephony pioneer Stylus Innovation (acq by Artisoft) and played key roles at other startups including Direct Hit Technologies (acq by Ask Jeeves). She started her career as manufacturing engineer for the Space Shuttle Main Engine and researcher at MIT’s Media Lab.
Between startups, Z helped produce and edit documentary series for NSF, HBR, and the Smithsonian and has coached dozens of innovators whose videos have millions of views online. She was named Forbes Champion of Free Enterprise in 2010, and is member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and YPO/WPO. Her work has appeared in the Economist, Forbes, BusinessWeek, strategy+business, HuffPo, CNN.com, Big Think, Science Progress, NASA Ask, and Mountain Bike Magazine.
Z received her B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering from MIT. She is a licensed skydiver and SCUBA instructor, and avid backcountry telemark skier, adventure traveler, mountain biker, and authentic food aficionado. She is married and resides in Los Angeles.
